Iceberg

‘Many children feel isolated on returning to school after a parental death and many also felt excluded within their family; for these children, choices and acknowledgements seemed to be key.'

‘Project Iceberg’ was a doctoral study at the University of York investigating the effects of parental death on children and young people. The research found that the effects of parental bereavement can be far reaching and unpredictable. An awareness of how children and young people may be supported can help to minimise these effects.

The ‘Iceberg’ project is summarised in ‘Understanding Children’s Experience of Parental Bereavement’ published by Jessica Kingsley Publications and John Holland presents these findings at conferences locally, nationally and internationally.

'Lost for Words' was partly based on the findings of the'Iceberg' research, being a response to the needs of bereaved children that had been identified, and 'Responding to Loss and Bereavement in Schools' was a further development which helps schools to audit and develop their own contextual responses, rather than 'one size fits all'.
